It’s time to sell or die…

Jen thought of this concept of making promises instead of new year’s resolutions. But the key to this is making promises that you can keep. The hardest promises you make are those to yourself — whether it’s personal things, business-related, or so on. And it’s important not to make promises you can’t keep. We’re delving into this today to help set you up for success in 2022.

The Three Categories of Promises

There are three different types of promises you can make in the new year. They are as follows:

  • The promises you make to yourself
  • The promises you make to your family
  • The promises you make to your career

Understanding how you can keep your promises and work through them in a way that makes it more feasible to accomplish your overarching goals.

More About Promises You Make to Yourself

The best way to think about promises is to set one that you can actually sign up to take on. Because if you set one that is so ridiculous that you’re not going to do it, what’s the point, right? And furthermore, when you don’t keep your promises in a relationship, you start to lose those people and lose their trust. This happens with yourself too, except you don’t acknowledge it like you would in a relationship with someone else, which is a key difference.

That means you trust yourself less when you make a promise to yourself. But if you make a promise to yourself and fall off on it, it’s a lack of integrity. And if you don’t act with integrity in the promises you make to yourself, it’s hard to believe you’ll have integrity in how you act in your promises to others. And finally, if you can’t gratify yourself with your own fulfilled promise, how are you going to do it for someone else?

The Right Way to Look at Promises

The way to look at a promise, goal, intention, or resolution is to not lower your standards so you can make it – that’s silly. You want to have good standards and achieve more.

However, when you’re setting an intention or new goal, understand what it’s going to take to make it a reality. Maybe sometimes it requires new habits. Maybe you need to break it down into smaller goals. Maybe you will need to start slowly to work up to achieving your goal.

It’s all about committing to what’s doable. Breaking things down and committing to achievable, doable goals will help you build trust with yourself. Soon your mindset will be, I can do this! I can do that!

Building Your Self Confidence: The Bottom Line

Achieving the small chunks of your promises and goals gives you evidence that you’ve done something like you’re looking to achieve before. When you have that evidence in your mind, you begin to tell yourself the story that you can do it again.

This adds to your self-confidence factor and allows you to believe that you can do these things again. Your past experiences will give you the confidence to move forward, and when you add confidence to preparation, that creates a big win.
