This personal challenge e-book describes the personal evolution necessary to become a super-star.

Business Strategy is Like a Well Devised Game Plan, Point #1: Sometimes we just have to adjust or sometimes we just have to keep on with what we're doing.

People who want to win and be champions at sales, sports, or simply in their business strategy are not wired to give up. As an analogy, if you’re down at half time, you have to suck it up. It happens. This comes down to you finding a way and deciding what you can do better in the third quarter. If you’re doing great and the other team is doing better, then you need to persevere and continue as you are. Sometimes, we don’t need to do a full 180-degree pivot, we simply need to adjust or persevere onwards.

When it comes to business strategy, stick with your game plan and what works. If it doesn’t work then don’t continue with that plan. A huge part of this is getting out of your head, it’s not easy but it is a simple concept. This comes down to a matter of taking action – the first step is believing you can do it and you will find the next steps from there. If you don’t want something bad enough or believe in yourself then you won’t do it, even if you have a good strategy in place. You can have a great game plan but if you’re not motivated, you’re not going to achieve that potential or success.

Business Strategy

Business Strategy is Like a Well Devised Game Plan, Point #2: Watching films is the greatest thing that salespeople can learn from college athletics or professional athletics.

Salespeople fail to record themselves and learn from their circumstances. However, if you’re in a college sport, you learn from two aspects of the film.  Firstly, you’re learning what your competitor’s weaknesses are, so you can play to those. Secondly, you are seeing your weaknesses and strengths. This allows you to analyze how you fix the weaknesses and emphasize your strengths.

We have to be willing to watch the film. As salespeople, you can implement this into your business strategy by recording on your iPhone and placing it into your briefcase, or having a partner record you. Even without that, you can implement this strategy by taking the time to sit down and evaluate what happened or occurred in your sales pitch. Not enough people take the initiative to do this. As an example, sometimes there’s a skinny mirror in dressing rooms that compliments your appearance as you’re trying on clothing. This skinny mirror tricks your mind into purchasing the clothing because you liked how you appeared in that mirror.

We all go through life with a skinny mirror mentality. You should have a vision of where you want to end up as a salesperson, but you also have to be realistic in terms of how your sales interactions go and analyze what you could have done better. Ask yourself why you didn’t make that sale, and it’s not always because of external factors – it’s because of us. Take responsibility for that concept and find solutions.

Business Strategy is Like a Well Devised Game Plan, Point #3: Mindset is key when it comes to playing the game to win.

When it comes to having a mission of winning whether it’s sports or business – strategy, mindset, and skill set all play a role. However, mindset is essential to achieve the other qualities. The mental toughness and how you approach obstacles can dictate a lot of other factors.

To put this into perspective, if you don’t have the ability to do something, there is a limit to what you could do but if you have the right mindset, you can overcome the lack of ability. For example, Nick Foles who’s in the NFL, he’s not a not bad quarterback, he’s just not as naturally gifted as other quarterbacks in the NFL. Nick ultimately still won a super bowl. We see this all the time, you may not be a Lamar Jackson but you can still achieve success.

Mindset plays a huge role in every aspect of life, you have to handle adversity and be able to bounce back after rejections. Having the right mindset where if you’re in a position of losing in a circumstance, but you know you’ll come out better next time is essential. Not everything will go right but you do what you can and let the rest fall into place.

Business Strategy is Like a Well Devised Game Plan: The Bottomline

The game plan behind a sport is quite similar to a business strategy. Ultimately, mindset is key as you get challenges and obstacles thrown your way. To have a winner mentality, you must acknowledge your current game plan and whether it’s serving you or not. Sometimes, we just need to persevere and continue as we are. Other times, we have to switch up the plan.
