Victoria’s inspiration for the term “risk forward.”

Victoria had the opportunity to study with the great mime Marcel Marceau. He taught a type of movement called, in French, “risque avant,” which translates literally to “risk in advance.” It means to move a little off-balance or off-center but with your heart still open. Victoria thought that was a beautiful philosophy for life. 

Victoria says that it’s by risking forward that we find our way. When you take one step, the next step often reveals itself to you. 

Risking forward is not about “leap and the net will appear.” It’s not about betting the house. It’s about taking small, a little off-balance, heart-open steps. When we take small risks (and survive them) we get more comfortable with daring to follow our intuition.

What stops people from taking risks.

In business or in our personal lives, the biggest thing that stops us from taking risks is the fear of what other people will think about us. When we think about taking risks, all the “what if” questions start swirling in our heads, and they usually stop us from taking action.

Victoria shared this quote from American psychologist Rollo May: “The opposite of courage in our society is not fear. It’s conformity.” We’re afraid to be different, and yet, being different is often what would give us an edge to succeed in business or in anything else.

Instead of focusing on what other people are doing, focus on developing your own self-confidence. When you take a small risk, your self-confidence increases. And that gives you the ability to take the next risk.

Victoria’s examples of business risks in her life.

Victoria has a video called the Park Avenue Shuffle, which is definitely worth a watch. The video shows you how to cross the street with style. She didn’t know what she was going to do with that video. She just thought it would be fun to get out on Park Avenue and dance, film it, and see what happens. But that video ended up taking her backstage to the HBO comedy festival, and Steve Martin himself complimented her. 

Victoria had another idea when she was listening to her husband, Frank Oz, who was one of the original Muppet performers, talking with other Muppet performers. She loved listening to their conversation, and she thought other people would too. She didn’t know where the idea would take her, but she wanted to film their conversations.

The project “Muppet Guys Talking” became a full-length documentary feature that has now been viewed all over the world. She had no idea what it would turn into. But she took the first step. And that first step is what really counts.

Before you risk forward in your business or life, be sure that you’re doing it because YOU want to. As Victoria reminds us in the episode, it’s easy to start living by someone else’s goals. Check in with yourself and your own values. When you know yourself and what you really want, then you can see what calculated risk you can take.
